Indian Railways has announced the installation of liquid soap dispensers in non-AC sleeper coaches equipped with the On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS). This initiative aims to align the hygiene standards of non-AC coaches with those of their air-conditioned counterparts, ensuring a cleaner and more hygienic environment for all passengers.
Historically, the provision of liquid soap dispensers was limited to AC coaches, leaving non-AC sleeper coaches lacking in basic hygiene amenities. This disparity often led to passenger complaints regarding the cleanliness and sanitation of these coaches. Recognizing the need for uniform hygiene standards across all coach categories, the Railway Board has mandated the installation of liquid soap dispensers in all non-AC sleeper reserved coaches that are serviced by OBHS. The decision comes as part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to improve passenger amenities and cleanliness. OBHS, which is currently operational in approximately 1,050 trains, ensures that coaches are cleaned twice daily and as per passenger requests during the journey.
This service includes the maintenance of toilets, doorways, aisles, and passenger compartments, thereby enhancing the overall travel experience. The installation of liquid soap dispensers will be carried out in phases, starting with long-distance mail and express trains that have OBHS facilities. These dispensers will be strategically placed near wash basins in toilets and corridors. Before the commencement of each journey, the dispensers will be filled with liquid soap, and they will be replenished as needed during the trip to ensure continuous availability. This move aligns with the broader objectives of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and Indian Railways’ ‘Utkrisht’ project, which focus on enhancing cleanliness and passenger amenities. The ‘Utkrisht’ project aims to provide better facilities and amenities by upgrading coaches in trains, thereby improving the overall passenger experience. Passenger feedback has been instrumental in driving this change.
Many travelers have expressed concerns over the lack of basic hygiene facilities in non-AC sleeper coaches, especially during long journeys. The introduction of liquid soap dispensers is expected to address these concerns and promote better hygiene practices among passengers. As Indian Railways continues to modernize and improve its services, initiatives like the installation of hand wash facilities in non-AC sleeper coaches reflect a commitment to passenger welfare and public health. By ensuring that all coaches, regardless of class, meet high hygiene standards, Indian Railways is setting a benchmark for cleanliness and passenger care in the railway sector. This development is a welcome step towards making train travel more comfortable and hygienic for all passengers, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness in public transportation systems.
