Indian Railways Enhances Safety Measures for Vande Bharat Trains

The Vande Bharat Express, India’s flagship semi-high-speed train, is encountering significant safety concerns due to frequent cattle collisions.

These incidents have prompted Indian Railways to initiate comprehensive safety measures to protect both passengers and livestock. A recent safety report by the Commission of Railway Safety highlights that the Vande Bharat Express’s lightweight design, particularly its nose cone, is susceptible to damage during high-speed cattle collisions. Unlike traditional locomotives equipped with cattle guards, the Vande Bharat Express lacks this feature, leading to frequent damage to its front cone upon impact. To address this, Indian Railways has commenced the installation of metal beam fencing along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, covering approximately 620 km. This initiative aims to prevent cattle from straying onto tracks, thereby reducing collision risks . Cattle collisions not only damage train infrastructure but also pose significant safety risks. In one incident, a bull calf struck by the Vande Bharat Express near Alwar, Rajasthan, was thrown into the air and knocked down an 82-year-old man, resulting in his death . Such occurrences underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols and infrastructure improvements.
In addition to fencing, Indian Railways is implementing various infrastructure upgrades to mitigate collision risks. These include the construction of subways for safe livestock crossings, the elimination of level crossings, and the deployment of Railway Protection Force personnel at vulnerable locations. These measures aim to create a safer environment for both passengers and animals. While the Vande Bharat Express represents a significant advancement in India’s rail network, addressing safety concerns related to cattle collisions is imperative. The ongoing infrastructure enhancements and safety measures reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of its services. Continued vigilance and investment in safety infrastructure will be crucial as the network expands and modernizes.
