Indian Railways Boosts Security for Women with Chilli Spray

Indian Railways has decided to equip women personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) with chilli spray cans. This non-lethal, practical tool will help RPF personnel swiftly address security challenges, particularly when guarding women traveling alone or with children on trains.

The decision underscores Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to improving women’s security and promoting gender inclusivity across its expansive network. The chilli spray cans are expected to provide women RPF personnel with an added layer of security, enabling them to deter threats and manage emergency situations, especially in isolated areas like remote stations or trains, where immediate support may not be readily available.
An official stated that this move is part of the broader effort to ensure that women passengers have a safe and comfortable journey.

“The initiative aligns with the broader vision of empowering women and creating safer public spaces, as advocated by national leadership,” the official added. Indian Railways has consistently placed emphasis on female-centric initiatives. One such measure is the induction of more women into the RPF, with the force now having one of the highest proportions of female personnel among central armed police forces.

This has resulted in the formation of the ‘Meri Saheli’ teams, tasked with assisting women passengers. These teams engage with thousands of women daily, offering both security and reassurance. Additionally, women RPF personnel have been instrumental in supporting female passengers in distress, particularly during emergencies such as childbirth. In 2024 alone, women RPF personnel facilitated 174 births on board, ensuring privacy, dignity, and medical assistance.

With the introduction of chilli spray cans, women RPF personnel are now better equipped to handle security challenges, reaffirming Indian Railways’ commitment to creating safer, more inclusive travel experiences for all.
