Indian Railways and Wabtec Launch of Global Locomotive Exports

Indian Railways has joined forces with Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited to export locomotives to international markets, particularly targeting customers in Africa. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for India’s ambitions to emerge as a global hub for locomotive production. Wabtec will supply the advanced Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives, equipped with a powerful 4,500 HP engine recognised for its exceptional fuel efficiency and reliability in high-temperature conditions.

Deliveries of these state-of-the-art locomotives are slated to commence in 2025, with the Marhowra facility in Bihar set to play a crucial role. This will be the first time the Marhowra plant will manufacture locomotives specifically for export, a move that aligns seamlessly with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for the World’ initiatives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As the facility begins to export standard-gauge locomotives, it is poised to significantly broaden the local supplier network, creating long-term employment opportunities and contributing positively to the Indian economy. The Marhowra plant has been earmarked as a vital global manufacturing centre, bolstered by a robust local supplier ecosystem. Currently, Indian Railways operates a fleet of approximately 650 newly constructed locomotives from this partnership, showcasing the facility’s burgeoning capacity. With an eye on sustainability, Wabtec and Indian Railways are committed to enhancing the plant’s capabilities to support eco-friendly export manufacturing practices.

Established in 2018, the Marhowra facility spans 70 acres and was designed with a production capacity of 1,000 locomotives annually for Indian Railways. Employing around 600 skilled workers, the plant has already delivered an average of 100 locomotives per year, playing a critical role in the industrial development of the region. This initiative not only reinforces India’s manufacturing prowess but also positions the country as a key player in the global rail industry. Moreover, this collaboration reflects a broader narrative of sustainability within the rail sector. By focusing on fuel-efficient technologies and creating jobs, the partnership contributes to India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting green manufacturing practices. As India strengthens its position in the global market, the collaboration between Indian Railways and Wabtec is not just a business venture; it’s a testament to the nation’s aspirations for economic growth and sustainable development.
