In a ground-breaking endeavour, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) is championing a paradigm shift in healthcare with the introduction of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) in India. This innovative initiative is poised to redefine medical response, ensuring swift emergency care within the critical golden hour following life-threatening incidents. The MoCA’s strategic intervention commenced
with the initiation of a pioneering pilot project, heralding the incorporation of helicopters in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) roles. This visionary move aims to revolutionise medical outreach and enhance emergency healthcare accessibility across the nation Following a meticulous tender process, a designated party has been selected to provide a dedicated helicopter operating in an air ambulance capacity at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh helipad. This initiative is slated for a one-year term and serves as a trailblazer for the integration of similar services nationwide. Notably, states like Odisha and Madhya Pradesh have already expressed keen interest in replicating this ground-breaking model.
The selected helicopter is equipped with a comprehensive Emergency Medical Service (EMS) kit, featuring a stretcher and essential medical equipment. This setup facilitates the seamless transportation of one patient accompanied by one to two medical personnel over a distance of 100 nautical miles. The operational efficiency and medical preparedness of this airborne healthcare service underscore its potential to revolutionise emergency medical response in India.
