India’s push towards enhancing the quality and reliability of electricity supply took centre stage as Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, called for the expeditious implementation of projects under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
This directive was issued during a high-level meeting chaired by the minister, aimed at reviewing the nation’s power sector landscape and strategizing future advancements. The RDSS initiative stands as a cornerstone in India’s efforts to modernize its power distribution infrastructure, ensuring robustness and efficiency across the grid. The scheme’s primary objective is to elevate the standards of electricity supply, addressing longstanding issues of reliability and operational resilience. Deputy Chief Minister Shri Chowna Mein, representing the state’s commitment, affirmed full support from the power department towards facilitating Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in their endeavours, particularly in the development of hydropower projects.
Emphasizing collaborative efforts, he outlined plans to expedite the completion of 13 hydroelectric projects, projecting significant economic benefits. “The completion of these projects is expected to inject approximately Rs. 10,000 crore annually into the state’s revenues, potentially elevating the per capita income to levels seen in developed states,” highlighted the Ministry of Power. Critical to the agenda was the urgency expressed in advancing major projects like the 2000-megawatt Subansiri Lower and the 2800-megawatt Dibang Multipurpose Project. These large-scale ventures are pivotal in bolstering India’s energy security framework, aiming to meet growing demand and fortify the nation’s energy mix.
The meeting underscored the pivotal role of streamlined project management and regulatory facilitation in achieving ambitious energy goals. Minister Shri Manohar Lal stressed the imperative for timely execution, citing the direct correlation between project completion and enhanced operational efficiencies across the power sector.
