The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries, focusing on critical sectors such as education, health, agriculture, irrigation, and community empowerment. This initiative is part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and support socio-economic development in Sri Lanka.
The funding will be directed towards key areas, aiming to boost infrastructure and empower local communities in the Eastern Province. Specifically, India will allocate Rs 315 million for education projects to improve local schools and educational facilities, Rs 780 million for healthcare to enhance medical infrastructure and provide better health services, Rs 620 million for agriculture to boost farming techniques and irrigation systems, and Rs 230 million for fisheries to support local fishermen and the growth of the industry.
The Indian government’s financial contribution will play a vital role in improving the region’s infrastructure, stimulating economic growth, and addressing local needs. These projects are part of broader India-Sri Lanka cooperation and are designed to foster long-term stability and progress in the region. Minister Nalinda Jayathissa, speaking on behalf of the Sri Lankan Cabinet, emphasised that the MoU would not only support infrastructure improvements but also contribute to the empowerment of local communities, enabling them to realise sustainable development. He added that these initiatives would be transformative for the Eastern Province, improving the quality of life and providing increased access to vital services.
