India continues to witness intense monsoon activity with total rainfall reaching 254 millimetres so far, marking a 15 percent surplus compared to the seasonal average. The ongoing downpour has resulted in widespread destruction, floods, and multiple fatalities across several states.
In Madhya Pradesh, four members of a family died after a bridge collapsed due to heavy rains, sweeping away their car. Several districts including Balaghat, Mandla, Seoni, Itarsi, and Katni remain submerged or waterlogged. In Mandsaur, two youths drowned in the Gandhi Sagar Dam while another man was washed away by river currents in Katni. In Himachal Pradesh, 14 people have died in the last six days due to cloudbursts and landslides. More than 500 houses have been damaged and at least 28 people are reported missing. Mandi district is the worst hit with rescue teams deployed across affected areas.
Rajasthan is also reeling under heavy rainfall with over 20 districts affected. A woman died in Dausa after a wall collapse, and in Jhunjhunu, a critical road connecting National Highway 52 was washed away due to overflowing rivers. In Uttarakhand, a vehicle fell into a ravine in Chamoli following intense rain. The Badrinath route was closed temporarily after a landslide, and authorities have warned pilgrims to stay alert.
Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur has been grappling with severe waterlogging due to non-stop rain over the past three days. In Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district, train services were halted for four hours due to flooded railway tracks. Jammu and Kashmir witnessed flash floods in Rajouri and Poonch after heavy rain, claiming the life of a man in the area. Several parts of the Union Territory remain on alert.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for 12 states including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Uttarakhand for July 9, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has been sounded in 20 other states including Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Travelers heading toward pilgrimage sites, especially along Char Dham Yatra routes, have been advised to exercise extreme caution due to the risk of landslides and cloudbursts in the hilly regions. State governments and disaster response teams are on high alert as the monsoon continues to intensify.
