India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry has flagged the Chinese export ban on permanent magnets—essential components in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and white goods—as a wake-up call to reduce over-reliance on a single country. China currently controls nearly 90% of global magnet production, a concentration that has triggered growing alarm across international industry corridors.
Acknowledging short-term challenges for domestic manufacturers, the government is accelerating approvals for alternate sourcing while exploring long-term technological substitutes. A multi-pronged approach involving diplomatic outreach, private-sector partnerships, and startup ecosystem engagement is at the heart of India’s response.The move is not just reactive but part of a larger ambition to transform India into a global alternative for critical mineral supply chains. These collaborative efforts are expected to foster resilient and environmentally responsible alternatives to conventional supply systems.The automotive industry, especially electric vehicle manufacturers, has urged the government to fast-track approvals for essential imports from China, even as contingency plans take shape.
