India Railways To Roll Out 600 Modern Coaches With Safety Feature

Indian Railways is set to launch 600 next-generation passenger coaches, bringing in a wave of modernisation aimed at enhancing safety, comfort, and environmental sustainability. The new Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches will feature advanced facilities including bio-toilets, modular interiors, CCTV surveillance, and noise-reduction technology, promising a safer and more pleasant travel experience for millions.

The ₹1,888 crore contract to manufacture these fully functional coaches has been awarded to Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The project covers 400 general second-class day coaches and 200 sleeper-class coaches, with the first prototypes expected within six months. Delivery of all units must be completed in just 15 months, marking one of the fastest large-scale upgrades in recent years.According to railway officials, the decision is part of a broader nationwide effort to modernise the passenger fleet while improving operational efficiency. Bio-toilets with pressurised flushing systems will enhance hygiene and reduce waste discharge, aligning with the government’s environmental objectives. Modular interiors will improve durability and simplify maintenance, while advanced decoupling rubber technology will cut down both noise and vibration, significantly improving ride quality.

Like the Vande Bharat trains, the new LHB coaches will feature emergency alarm systems and CCTV cameras, enhancing onboard security. Mobile charging points and a 10-hour battery backup for essential systems such as lights and fans will ensure uninterrupted services, even during power outages.LHB coaches, introduced to India through a transfer of technology from Germany in 2003, have steadily replaced the older ICF-type coaches known for their limitations in speed, safety, and comfort. Production of ICF coaches ceased in 2018, with Indian Railways focusing entirely on LHB technology for its superior performance and safety features.

Government data shows that more than 23,000 ICF coaches have been replaced with LHB variants since 2015. In 2024–25 alone, Indian Railways produced 7,134 coaches, a nine per cent rise from the previous year. ICF Chennai led with over 3,000 coaches, followed by Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala and Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli. For the coming year, ICF has set its sights on producing 4,000 coaches, including outsourced units. The expansion ties in with BEML’s long-term manufacturing growth strategy. A new ₹1,800 crore unit in Umaria, Madhya Pradesh, is expected to bolster indigenous production of advanced trains, metro coaches, and defence equipment, while generating over 5,000 jobs in the next five years. The latest initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to upgrading its infrastructure in line with global standards, ensuring that passengers can look forward to safer, cleaner, and more comfortable train journeys in the years ahead.
