India Mumbai Metro Line 4 4A Power Systems Contract Awarded

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has awarded Package CA‑298 for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A, a critical systems contract that will electrify and equip core sections of the city’s expanding rapid transit network. The move underscores efforts to enhance urban mobility, reduce congestion and provide more sustainable transport options for India’s largest metropolitan region.

The contract has been secured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which will undertake the design, manufacture, supply, installation, integration and commissioning of power supply, traction systems and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platform across these metro extensions. The corridor links Wadala to Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh, covering roughly 35.2 km of elevated alignment. Beyond mainline electrification, Package CA‑298 includes the delivery and integration of electrical and mechanical systems, lifts, escalators and five years of post‑commissioning support across 22 elevated stations and two depots on Lines 4 and 4A. The SCADA system will help centralise monitoring and control across 32 nodes — including stations, depots and the key receiving substation — reinforcing operational reliability and safety.

Urban planners say contracts like Package CA‑298 are essential to ensure that infrastructure supply keeps pace with Mumbai’s rapid growth. Line 4 and its 4A branch are designed to fill critical gaps in east‑west and north‑south connectivity, linking suburban districts with central city and port areas and bridging several transit corridors. The project’s focus on electrification and advanced control systems also supports broader sustainability goals. By powering heavy urban transit with reliable electrical traction and smart control technologies, the lines are expected to reduce road traffic reliance, lower per‑passenger emissions and offer more energy‑efficient mobility options aligned with low‑carbon city planning principles.

For local residents and commuters, the enhanced metro infrastructure promises tangible improvements in daily life, including shorter travel times and reduced dependence on private vehicles for long suburban commutes. Economic development experts note that improved transit network capacity can also elevate labour market access, housing choices and property values along metro corridors, factors vital for equitable metropolitan growth. Execution of Package CA‑298 follows a series of interlinked contracts awarded across the Line 4 and 4A corridor — covering rolling stock, signalling, track works and station systems — revealing a coordinated delivery strategy by MMRDA with L&T emerging as a key partner across multiple packages.

Looking ahead, seamless integration of these electrification works with signalling systems and future trial runs ahead of full commercial operations will be essential. As Mumbai’s metro network continues expanding, sustained focus on integrated infrastructure delivery, operational readiness and commuter experience will determine how effectively it reshapes urban mobility and supports inclusive city development.
