Minister Yadav meticulously outlined India’s comprehensive climate policy architecture, emphasising three pivotal drivers. Central to this framework is India’s determined transition from a conventional linear economic model to a robust circular economy. This transformative shift aims to drastically reduce waste generation and significantly enhance resource efficiency across all sectors. A testament to this commitment is the government’s proactive introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines. These regulations span diverse sectors, including tyres, batteries, plastics, and e-waste, specifically designed to incentivise and promote widespread recycling and sustainable consumption patterns. The tangible impact of these policies is already evident, with the recycling sector attracting substantial investments totalling Rs 10,000 crore between 2022 and 2024, signalling a robust industry commitment to greener practices. Projections indicate that the circular economy sector alone is poised to reach a valuation of a staggering $2 trillion by 2050, concurrently generating an estimated 10 million new jobs, thereby aligning economic growth with environmental stewardship.
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has further solidified its commitment to environmental conservation through groundbreaking initiatives. Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) stands as a beacon of this commitment, a nationwide campaign designed to foster individual and community-driven actions towards environmental protection. Complementing this, the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree for Mother) campaign encourages widespread tree plantation, weaving environmental care into the social fabric. The Minister highlighted the transformative potential of the recently introduced Green Credit Rules under Mission LiFE, which serve to incentivise voluntary actions geared towards environmental conservation. The government has taken a significant step forward by releasing the draft framework of its climate finance taxonomy. This crucial document meticulously outlines methodologies for classifying economic activities under both adaptation and mitigation categories, providing a clear roadmap for directing financial flows towards environmentally sound projects. Furthermore, the development of India’s first National Adaptation Plan, slated for submission to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), underscores this unwavering resolve.
