India Launches Driverless Metro Trainset For Ahmedabad Phase Two Expansion Project

Ahmedabad’s urban transport network marked a significant milestone with the unveiling of India’s first driverless metro trainset for Phase Two of the city’s metro expansion. Assembled by Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd at its Uttarpara facility in West Bengal, the trainset represents a major step in domestic rail manufacturing and automation for urban transit.

Designed for the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the trainset boasts 70–75% local content, aligning with national initiatives promoting indigenous production and self-reliance in infrastructure projects. “This milestone reflects India’s growing capability to deliver advanced rail solutions while supporting domestic industry,” an official noted, highlighting the importance of local manufacturing in the country’s rail sector. Phase Two of the Ahmedabad Metro extends 28.26 km along an elevated corridor featuring 22 stations. The driverless trainsets will operate primarily on the Yellow Line connecting Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, covering 23.8 km. Additionally, they will serve a branch of the Violet Line linking Gujarat National Law University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, and GIFT City over 5.4 km. These extensions are expected to improve commute times and enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Each trainset is equipped with a Train Control and Management System enabling fully unattended operations, complemented by modern monitoring and safety systems. Interiors have been thoughtfully designed with dedicated spaces for persons with reduced mobility, ensuring inclusive and comfortable transit for all passengers. Industry experts note that concentrating local production and advanced automation in metro projects enhances operational efficiency and reduces dependency on foreign components. The delivery of this trainset also underlines India’s growing expertise in high-tech rail systems, complementing ongoing projects such as Vande Bharat trains.

Officials emphasised that the successful deployment of driverless trainsets reinforces Gujarat’s commitment to modernising urban mobility while promoting sustainable local manufacturing. By integrating automated systems and domestic production, the Phase Two metro expansion is expected to set a benchmark for future high-capacity urban transit projects across the country. As Ahmedabad continues to expand its metro network, the introduction of indigenous driverless trains highlights the city’s focus on efficient, inclusive, and technologically advanced urban transportation, marking a key step towards a future-ready, sustainable transit ecosystem.
