Prime Minister is set to inaugurate India’s first vertical lift sea bridge, the New Pamban Bridge, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, on April 6, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami.
This engineering marvel, constructed at a cost of over ₹550 crore, spans 2.08 kilometers and features a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that rises to a height of 17 metres, facilitating the seamless passage of maritime traffic beneath.
The New Pamban Bridge replaces the century-old structure commissioned in 1914, which had become inadequate due to the harsh marine environment and increasing transportation demands. The new bridge is designed to accommodate dual rail tracks, anticipating future transportation needs, and incorporates advanced construction materials such as stainless steel reinforcement and high-grade protective paint to enhance durability and reduce maintenance requirements.
Beyond its structural innovations, the bridge holds significant cultural importance. According to the Ramayana, the construction of Ram Setu was initiated from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram, underscoring the region’s historical and spiritual relevance.
The inauguration of the New Pamban Bridge is expected to bolster regional connectivity, providing a vital link between Rameswaram and the mainland. This enhanced connectivity is anticipated to stimulate economic growth, facilitate tourism, and improve access to essential services for local communities. Additionally, the bridge’s construction aligns with sustainable development goals by incorporating modern engineering techniques that minimize environmental impact and promote longevity.
In conjunction with the bridge’s inauguration, Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone and dedicate various rail and road projects worth over ₹8,300 crore in Tamil Nadu. These projects aim to connect numerous pilgrim centres and tourist destinations, reduce travel distances between cities, and enable faster access to medical facilities and ports. They are also expected to empower local farmers by facilitating the transportation of agricultural products to nearby markets and boost economic activity in local industries.
The New Pamban Bridge stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. By blending heritage with innovation, this project not only preserves the cultural and historical significance of the region but also marks a significant leap forward in design, connectivity, and regional development.
