India Expands High Speed Rail Network New Bullet Train Corridors Planned
India is set to significantly expand its high-speed rail network, with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) commencing groundwork for new bullet train corridors beyond the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. This ambitious initiative, confirmed by the Railway Minister in the Lok Sabha, aims to meet the escalating passenger demand across major cities of commercial, economic, and tourist importance. The development of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for several new routes marks a pivotal step towards revolutionizing inter-city travel and bolstering connectivity across the nation.
The proposed high-speed rail corridors under evaluation include vital links such as Delhi – Varanasi, Delhi – Ahmedabad, Mumbai – Nagpur, Mumbai – Hyderabad, Chennai – Mysore, Delhi – Amritsar, and Varanasi – Howrah. These routes are part of a strategic plan to integrate key regions, reduce travel times, and stimulate economic activity along the new lines. Decisions on taking up these new projects will be contingent upon various critical factors, including comprehensive technical feasibility assessments, financial and economic viability studies, detailed projections of traffic demand, and the securing of appropriate funding mechanisms. NHSRCL, a joint venture between the central government and participating states, is spearheading these extensive planning efforts to ensure a robust and sustainable expansion.
Significant progress continues on India’s first bullet train project, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, which is being developed with crucial technical collaboration and financial support from Japan. The Ministry of Railways is targeting the full completion of this 508-km corridor by December 2029. As part of a phased rollout, the Gujarat stretch, from Vapi to Sabarmati, is anticipated to become operational two years earlier, by December 2027. Construction efforts are advancing rapidly, with substantial work completed on pier construction, girder casting, and girder launching, including the commencement of work on a challenging undersea tunnel segment.
