India Detects New COVID Variant NB.1.8.1

Health authorities have identified a new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, in India, coinciding with its detection among international travelers at major U.S. airports.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported cases in California, Washington state, Virginia, and the New York City area, linked to travelers from countries including Japan, South Korea, France, and China. NB.1.8.1 is a sub-lineage of the JN.1 variant, which remains prevalent in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated NB.1.8.1 as a “Variant Under Monitoring” due to its potential for increased transmissibility and immune evasion. Despite these concerns, WHO’s initial assessment suggests a low global public health risk from this variant.

In India, the variant has been detected in states such as Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. As of May 26, the country reported 1,009 active COVID-19 cases, with a noticeable uptick in regions like Delhi, which accounted for 104 cases, 99 of which emerged in the past week. Early studies indicate that NB.1.8.1 may spread more easily than other variants, but it doesn’t appear to cause more severe illness. Symptoms associated with this variant include fatigue, mild respiratory issues, sore throat, and slight fever.

Health experts advise continued adherence to preventive measures such as mask-wearing in crowded places, maintaining social distance, and staying up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters. The public is urged to monitor symptoms closely and seek early testing and medical consultation if symptoms appear. The emergence of NB.1.8.1 underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and public health preparedness. While the current risk level remains manageable, authorities emphasize the need for vigilance to mitigate potential surges in infections.
