India Data Centre Expansion Eyes AI Scale

India’s digital infrastructure landscape is preparing for a potential scale-up as a listed domestic technology firm has outlined a long-term plan to invest up to $1 billion in artificial intelligence-focused data centres across the country. If executed as proposed, the phased programme could add hundreds of megawatts of computing capacity, reshaping how Indian cities plan energy, land use and technology infrastructure.

The proposed investment, subject to regulatory clearances and market conditions, is expected to support as much as 800 megawatts of data centre capacity over several years. Industry analysts note that such a scale would place the company among the more significant domestic participants in India’s fast-growing data centre ecosystem, which remains underbuilt relative to projected demand.India’s operational data centre capacity is currently estimated at under 1.5 gigawatts. Demand, driven by cloud adoption, artificial intelligence workloads, digital public infrastructure and data localisation requirements, is expected to more than double by the end of the decade. AI-focused facilities, in particular, require substantially higher power density, specialised cooling systems and resilient grid connectivity compared with conventional enterprise data centres.

According to people familiar with the company’s planning, the proposed facilities are being designed to support high-performance computing and graphics processing workloads, which are increasingly central to sectors such as financial services, e-commerce, telecoms, research and government platforms. The strategy includes a mix of hyperscale campuses, edge facilities and AI-optimised sites, spread across established metros and emerging technology corridors.Urban planners and infrastructure experts say large-scale data centre development has implications well beyond the technology sector. These facilities are energy-intensive, often becoming anchor consumers within city power grids. As a result, their location, renewable energy sourcing and cooling efficiency increasingly influence urban sustainability outcomes. Integrating clean power, water-efficient cooling and climate-resilient design is becoming a baseline expectation rather than an optional feature.

The company has indicated that construction could begin in the 2026 financial year, with capacity additions aligned to customer commitments and execution readiness. Specific locations and initial capital outlays have not been disclosed. Market observers note that phased development is typical in this sector, given the capital intensity and reliance on long-term anchor clients to ensure financial viability.In addition to commercial cloud services, the planned facilities are expected to support sovereign and isolated data environments for customers with regulatory or security requirements. This aligns with India’s broader push for digital sovereignty, particularly for government-linked institutions and strategic sectors handling sensitive data.

While investor interest in India’s data centre market remains strong, execution risks persist. Land acquisition, power availability, transmission upgrades and environmental clearances remain critical constraints. How effectively developers balance scale, sustainability and urban integration will determine whether the next wave of AI data centres strengthens city infrastructure or strains it.
