India Commissions First 1MW Green Hydrogen Facility at Deendayal Port

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) at Kandla has commissioned the country’s first 1 Megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant. This facility, constructed under the Make-in-India programme, marks a significant step in aligning port infrastructure with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Maritime India Vision 2030. The plant, part of a planned 10 MW hydrogen project, was delivered in just four months and is fully powered by renewable energy.

It will produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, meeting global sustainability norms and supporting India’s net zero emissions goal by 2070. Top officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, along with key technical teams from the Port Authority and infrastructure firm L&T, inspected the facility ahead of its commissioning. Authorities praised the facility as a symbol of India’s evolving hydrogen capabilities and engineering execution. It is designed to accelerate clean fuel adoption in maritime logistics, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and promote domestic clean-tech manufacturing.

The 1MW unit’s successful deployment positions Deendayal Port as a frontrunner in the transition to hydrogen-based operations. Beyond powering internal port utilities, the plant will also support hydrogen fuel integration into shipping operations, paving the way for a new category of low-emission marine transport in India. Officials highlighted that this green milestone is not just infrastructural—it is strategic. By embedding green hydrogen capability within one of India’s largest ports, the country signals readiness to lead in hydrogen exports to energy-intensive economies such as Japan and the EU, where demand for clean fuels is soaring.

The port has previously led several decarbonisation initiatives, including deploying an electric tugboat under the Make-in-India framework. The hydrogen project builds on that legacy, strengthening India’s position in the global clean fuel race. Experts believe this commissioning sets the stage for a broader ecosystem of hydrogen-ready infrastructure across Indian ports. It offers a practical model for replication and sends a strong message to global climate partners: India is turning energy ambition into execution.

As the world transitions to sustainable fuels, Deendayal Port’s green hydrogen plant represents more than an energy project—it is a bold statement of intent. With proper policy support and scaling, it could transform India from a green hydrogen aspirant to a global hub for clean energy leadership.
