India’s ambitious Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015 with an investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore, has significantly transformed urban landscapes across the country. Recent assessments indicate that cities under this initiative have experienced a 23% improvement in air quality compared to non-smart cities over a six-year period ending in 2024.
This enhancement is attributed to measures such as the introduction of electric buses, expansion of green spaces, and the implementation of real-time pollution monitoring systems . The mission’s impact extends beyond environmental benefits. A State Bank of India report highlights a 27% reduction in crime rates within smart cities, underscoring the effectiveness of integrated surveillance systems, improved street lighting, and the establishment of Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) . For instance, Nagpur reported a 14% decline in overall crime rates following the implementation of these measures.
Moreover, the mission has enhanced urban mobility and sanitation. Over 7,500 projects have been completed, focusing on the development of smart roads, digital parking systems, and efficient water supply networks. These initiatives have not only improved the quality of life for residents but have also contributed to more sustainable and equitable urban environments
Education has also seen positive changes. In 19 cities, there has been a 22% increase in school enrolment, attributed to the development of 9,433 smart classrooms in 2,398 government schools. This advancement reflects the mission’s commitment to fostering inclusive and accessible education
As the Smart Cities Mission approaches its tenth year, the substantial progress made underscores the potential of strategic urban planning and investment. The integration of technology and infrastructure development has not only addressed immediate urban challenges but has also laid the groundwork for future resilience and sustainability.
