India and Singapore have taken a major step towards sustainable maritime operations by signing a Letter of Intent (LoI) to develop a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC). The agreement, signed during Singapore Maritime Week, marks a significant collaboration aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing digitalisation in the shipping industry. Both nations are committed to implementing cleaner and more efficient maritime practices that will shape the future of the sector.Under this partnership, India and Singapore will work on digitalisation and decarbonisation projects to accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly technologies in shipping.
The initiative aims to integrate smart maritime solutions and facilitate the use of green fuels to reduce the environmental impact of sea transport. By establishing this corridor, the two countries are setting a benchmark for other nations to follow in developing sustainable shipping solutions.During the visit to Singapore, discussions were also held with officials from the Netherlands on improving inland waterways and river transportation. With expertise in river engineering and modern vessel technology, the Netherlands could play a crucial role in supporting India’s efforts to enhance its waterways. This collaboration is expected to contribute to projects focused on making inland navigation more efficient and environmentally friendly.
The signing of the LoI also reflects a broader vision to transform ports into clean energy-driven hubs, decarbonise the shipping sector, and promote shipbuilding excellence. India is actively working towards creating a maritime industry that aligns with global sustainability goals, while Singapore remains a leader in digital maritime advancements. The partnership between these two nations will not only strengthen their bilateral ties but also create a model for green and digital shipping corridors worldwide.
