India Aerosol Paints Industry Expands With Urbanisation
India’s aerosol paints market is emerging as a notable growth segment within the country’s broader paints and coatings industry, supported by surging demand from construction activity, automotive maintenance and DIY applications. Forecasts suggest India’s aerosol paints sector could grow from an estimated USD 66.6 million in 2024 to more than USD 105 million by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 8.2% through the latter half of the decade.
The domestic expansion is anchored in the country’s rapid urbanisation and infrastructure spend, which has driven sustained construction output across residential, commercial and renovation projects. Aerosol paint products — pressurised coatings dispensed as fine sprays — are increasingly used for touch-ups, surface marking, metallic and protective coatings, particularly where convenience and speed are priorities. Analysts say that in urban retrofit work and finishing jobs, the quick drying and easy application characteristics of aerosol paints help contractors and small businesses reduce labour time and material waste.Urban planners and construction sector experts note that India’s housing and mixed-use development pipeline, complemented by government capital outlays for urban infrastructure, is widening the demand base for ancillary materials like aerosol paints. These products are also gaining traction in automotive refinishing and industrial maintenance, where vehicles and machinery require targeted coatings for corrosion resistance and aesthetic repair. Rising vehicle sales, which reached over 5 million units in 2023, further support aftermarket demand for spray coatings and custom finishes.
Despite its smaller scale relative to global peers, the Indian aerosol paints market’s growth rate outpaces broader industrial aerosol segments thanks to this multi-sector pull. The solvent-based product category remains dominant by revenue, although water-based and low-VOC formulations are gaining favour amid tightening environmental standards and consumer preferences for healthier indoor air quality.Distribution channels are also evolving. E-commerce platforms and specialised hardware retailers have broadened access, especially in Tier-II and Tier-III cities where traditional paint distribution was limited. Urban households are increasingly undertaking small renovation and DIY projects, boosting retail aerosol paint uptake outside conventional contractor markets.
Industry stakeholders underline that sustainability will be a defining feature of future growth. Manufacturers are investing in low-VOC aerosol technologies to align with environmental regulations and reduce smog-forming emissions in urban centres, an imperative for cities pursuing cleaner air and carbon-reduction pathways. Planners say integrating such products into standards for green building materials could accelerate adoption in public and private projects.
However, challenges persist. Higher raw material costs and competitive pressures from decorative paint segments — which dwarf aerosol volumes in India — mean producers must balance innovation with cost-efficiency. Nonetheless, as construction activity, vehicle ownership and consumer DIY behaviours continue to expand, the aerosol paints market is positioned as a nimble growth category within India’s evolving industrial landscape.
