India Achieves 50 Percent Clean Power Capacity Five Years Ahead of Target
India has reached a significant milestone in its energy transition journey, with 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity now sourced from non-fossil fuels. This achievement comes five years ahead of the 2030 target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement, as announced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Monday, July 14, 2025. This landmark underscores the country’s steadfast commitment to climate action and sustainable development, signalling an accelerating clean energy transformation.
This remarkable progress reflects visionary policy design, robust implementation, and India’s deep commitment to climate responsibility. Flagship programmes such as PM-KUSUM, which empowers farmers with solar-powered pumps for energy-secure agriculture, and PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024 to provide rooftop solar to one crore households, have significantly contributed to this success. Additionally, solar park development across the country has facilitated large-scale renewable energy installations at record-low tariffs, complemented by the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy.
The bioenergy sector has also emerged as a vital contributor, supporting both rural livelihoods and clean energy generation. These initiatives have not only decarbonized the power sector but have also delivered widespread co-benefits, including enhanced energy access, significant employment generation, reduced air pollution, improved public health outcomes, and stronger rural incomes, embodying inclusive growth. India’s advancement in this domain reinforces its leadership as a clean energy frontrunner on the global stage, demonstrating economic growth alongside environmental stewardship.
This early achievement firmly positions India as a global leader in clean energy transition, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental stewardship are mutually reinforcing goals. The next phase must prioritize equitable and resilient clean energy access for all citizens.
