IMD Predicts Intense Rainfall for Indian States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe weather warnings, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple Indian states. Maharashtra and Goa are under a red alert today, signalling extreme weather conditions. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Karnataka, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat, indicating significant rainfall but of a slightly lower intensity compared to the red alert regions.

The national capital, Delhi, is experiencing dense cloud cover, causing reduced visibility in several areas. Following recent heavy rainfall that tragically resulted in the loss of five lives, Pune is bracing for further showers. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the city, predicting heavy rainfall until tomorrow, followed by moderate rainfall until July 31. The IMD’s latest forecast includes the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall with occasional intense spells, isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. These conditions are expected to affect a wide range of regions, including Northwest Punjab, East Madhya Pradesh, South Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, South Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and East Assam over the next few hours. In Uttarakhand, very heavy rainfall is anticipated on July 26 and 27. Additional regions likely to experience heavy rainfall include Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand until July 29, as well as Haryana on July 26 and 27, and Punjab on July 27.

A press release from the IMD dated July 25 indicates that very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over South Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka until July 27, and in North Interior Karnataka on July 26. Similarly, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places on July 26 in Tamil Nadu, on July 29 in Kerala, and on July 28 and 29 in Karnataka. The IMD also predicts fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across East and Northeast India until July 30. In Delhi, the IMD has issued an orange alert, forecasting continuous rainfall until July 28. The weather office stated on social media platform X, “A cloud mass is passing through Delhi. Movement is slow, spells of moderate to intense rain may persist during the next 2 hours.”
