The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for 11 districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rainfall from June 22 to June 26. The forecast highlights isolated but intense showers across various regions, particularly in Malabar and central Kerala. The alerts aim to caution residents and local authorities as monsoon activity intensifies across the state.
On Sunday, yellow alerts were issued for 11 districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. These alerts signify the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, prompting caution in hilly and low-lying areas prone to waterlogging and minor landslides. The IMD defines heavy rain as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
For June 23 and 24, the focus of the alert narrows to four coastal and northern districts—Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod—which are expected to receive persistent rainfall. The IMD has asked local authorities in these regions to remain vigilant and take precautionary steps, particularly in vulnerable zones such as riverbanks, slopes, and urban drains.
The alerts expand again mid-week, with Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur rejoining the list on June 25. These central districts, which have already experienced several days of rain, are now bracing for renewed downpours. Meanwhile, the northern districts continue to remain under advisory as the monsoon holds firm in Kerala’s upper belt.
By June 26, the IMD expects rainfall to persist in seven districts: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. These warnings reflect the sustained monsoon presence across both central and northern Kerala. Despite being classified as “yellow”—the lowest of the three alert levels—the forecast urges continued caution, especially in areas with previous incidents of flooding or minor landslides.
As Kerala advances deeper into the monsoon season, consistent alerts from the IMD underline the need for preparedness across affected districts. While these weather patterns are typical for the time of year, their localised intensity can still pose risks to life, property, and mobility. Residents are advised to follow updates from official channels and take preventive measures as needed to ensure safety through this prolonged rainy spell.
