IMD Issues Red Alert for Assam and Meghalaya Amidst Heavy Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days.

This warning comes as the region grapples with the onset of the monsoon season, which has already led to significant weather-related disruptions. In Assam, the continuous downpour has caused widespread flooding, particularly in the Cachar district, where over 100,000 residents have been affected. The Brahmaputra River and its tributaries are flowing above danger levels, exacerbating the situation. Authorities have reported at least 34 fatalities due to floods and landslides in the northeastern states, with over 3.6 lakh people displaced across Assam .

In Meghalaya, the heavy rainfall has led to landslides, disrupting transportation and communication networks. The IMD’s red alert indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, potentially leading to flash floods and further landslides in vulnerable areas. The IMD has predicted that the heavy rainfall will persist until June 17, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. An orange alert has been issued for Arunachal Pradesh, indicating the need for preparedness against adverse weather conditions .

In response to the severe weather conditions, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to assist in rescue and relief operations. Emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced individuals, and efforts are underway to restore essential services disrupted by the adverse weather. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and follow instructions from local authorities. The IMD has also urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of intense weather activity.

The ongoing heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya underscores the vulnerability of the northeastern states to monsoon-related disasters. The IMD’s red alert serves as a critical reminder for residents and authorities to remain prepared and responsive to the evolving weather conditions. Continuous monitoring and prompt action are essential to mitigate the impact of these severe weather events on communities in the affected regions.
