IMD Forecasts Heavy Rains For Delhi Mumbai Rajasthan Himachal Punjab On Red Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings as monsoon activity intensifies across several Indian states. Delhi, Mumbai, and Rajasthan are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall in the coming days, while Himachal Pradesh and Punjab face red alert warnings for severe weather. Residents and authorities are being urged to prepare for potential disruptions caused by persistent rains.

In Delhi, the city woke up to grey skies and intermittent showers on August 26, offering temporary relief from the oppressive monsoon humidity. The IMD recorded nearly 13 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours. Forecasts indicate that light to moderate showers and occasional thundershowers will continue through August 31. Temperatures are expected to range between 28 and 34 degrees Celsius during the day, with high humidity making nights feel sticky. Commuters are advised to remain cautious, as waterlogging and traffic snarls could become frequent during heavier downpours, especially in low-lying areas and South-East Haryana, which may experience prolonged wet conditions. Mumbai and its neighbouring regions are also bracing for heavy rains. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy showers in Mumbai on August 26, 27, and 29, with moderate rainfall on August 28. Thane district will witness similar weather patterns, while Pune is likely to experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thundershowers throughout this period. Officials have emphasised preparedness for localized flooding and travel disruptions.

Further north, Himachal Pradesh faces a red alert due to very heavy rainfall, lightning, and thunderstorms in Chamba, Mandi, and Kangra districts. Authorities have warned of flash floods and landslides, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid vulnerable areas. Punjab has also been placed under a red alert in Ludhiana, Sangrur, Barnala, and Mansa districts, with officials highlighting the risks of intense rainfall affecting infrastructure and daily life. Rajasthan continues to see significant monsoon activity, with heavy to very heavy rainfall reported in multiple districts. The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur has issued an orange alert for Rajsamand, Sirohi, and Udaipur districts. Officials are monitoring river levels and advising villagers and commuters to stay alert as conditions remain volatile. Meteorologists emphasise that this period of monsoon activity, while crucial for replenishing water resources, requires proactive measures from both citizens and authorities. From traffic management to disaster preparedness, cities and rural areas alike must coordinate to mitigate risks associated with intense rainfall.

As monsoon patterns remain unpredictable, authorities across states are urged to balance precautionary action with daily mobility needs, ensuring safety while minimising disruption to life and commerce.
