National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has reclaimed its position as the third-best institution in the country, reflecting notable strides in research and innovation. The institute’s resurgence follows a previous drop to fourth place last year.
The improved ranking is attributed to IIT Bombay’s enhanced focus on research output and innovation. The institution has reported a remarkable 160% increase in patents granted during the 2023-24 financial year, reaching a record 421 patents. This achievement has catapulted the institute to the top spot in the innovation category, up from seventh place last year. “Our commitment to translating research into practical industry solutions has been a significant factor in our improved ranking,” said, Director of IIT Bombay.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has also shown commendable progress, ascending to the 98th position from its previous range of 151-200. This rise highlights TISS’s strengthened academic and research performance. Conversely, Mumbai University has faced a setback, dropping out of the top 100 institutions. Previously ranked 96th, the university now occupies the 101-150 band. Factors contributing to this decline include vacant teaching positions and other internal challenges. However, an official from the university indicated that recent improvements could reflect positively in the rankings next year.
St Xavier’s College, which had previously fallen out of the top 100, has made a notable recovery by securing the 89th position. Principal Rajendra Shinde attributed this to enhanced research efforts, improved graduate outcomes, and successful implementation of the National Education Policy 2020. The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) experienced a decline in most categories but retained its strong position in pharmacy, where it remains fifth. Vice-Chancellor acknowledged that recent structural changes and faculty transitions might have impacted the rankings temporarily but expressed confidence in future improvements.
