Recent data from the Telangana Pollution Control Board (TPCB) has revealed alarming noise pollution levels in Hyderabad’s upscale residential area of Jubilee Hills, surpassing those in industrial zones such as Sanathnagar. The findings, recorded in August, indicate that Jubilee Hills is experiencing noise pollution levels that significantly exceed acceptable limits, both during the day and at night.
In Jubilee Hills, daytime noise pollution has reached 71.30 dB (decibels), substantially above the permissible limit of 55 dB. At night, the situation worsens with noise levels peaking at 63.28 dB, which is over 40% higher than the acceptable level of 45 dB. This is a stark contrast to Sanathnagar, where daytime noise averaged 69.74 dB, just below the 75 dB threshold, and night-time levels reached 65.27 dB, exceeding the 70 dB limit. Similarly, Jeedimetla also reported high daytime noise levels at 66.49 dB.
The elevated noise levels in Jubilee Hills, a predominantly residential area, are particularly concerning given its comparison with industrial zones. Sensitive areas such as Zoo Park and Hyderabad Central University (Gachibowli) also reported troubling noise levels, raising additional concerns. senior social scientist with the TPCB, highlighted the impact of excessive noise, stating, “The high traffic noise levels are unacceptable. Such excessive noise can significantly affect workers in the area, including vendors, traffic police, and commuters.” Film director echoed these concerns, noting a marked increase in traffic and construction-related noise pollution over recent years.
An analyst from Apple added, “Noise pollution in areas like Shaikpet, Hitec City, and Banjara Hills is particularly severe during peak traffic hours from 8 am to 10 am. Addressing this issue seems challenging without a significant shift in civic behaviour.” The current noise pollution levels in Hyderabad underscore the urgent need for effective management and regulatory measures to safeguard the quality of life for residents and workers alike.
