Hyderabad’s Fateh Nagar Flyover Delay Sparks Commuter Outrage

Hyderabad commuters are expressing frustration as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) faces criticism for significant delays in the construction of a new flyover at Fateh Nagar. Intended to alleviate traffic congestion between Balanagar and Ameerpet, the project, approved by both railway authorities and the government in 2022, remains stalled despite assurances of progress.

The existing narrow flyover, a critical link for thousands commuting daily towards Ameerpet, Begumpet, and Yousufguda from Balanagar, has become a notorious bottleneck during peak hours. Commuters routinely endure lengthy delays and congestion, exacerbated during the monsoon season, when traffic can grind to a standstill for hours. Despite initial approval and permission from railway officials, including the initiation of land acquisition processes affecting over 100 properties, progress has stagnated. Landowners affected by the proposed construction have voiced concerns over the lack of communication regarding compensation and relocation procedures, leaving them in a state of uncertainty. “We are willing to cooperate with GHMC, but the absence of clarity on compensation is a major hindrance. How can we vacate our properties without assurance?” questioned a commercial property owner at Fateh Nagar, echoing sentiments shared by others affected. Fateh Nagar’s division corporator has urged GHMC to expedite the resolution of land acquisition issues and provide clarity on compensation.

Highlighting unanimous support from property owners to facilitate construction, the corporator emphasized the urgent need for the new flyover to mitigate persistent traffic woes in the area. Efforts to seek clarification from GHMC officials, including the engineering wing, have been met with silence, reflecting growing frustration and public scrutiny over the delayed infrastructure project. Despite assurances during recent council meetings regarding the progress of property acquisition bills, tangible outcomes remain elusive. The delay in the Fateh Nagar flyover project underscores broader concerns over governance transparency and project execution timelines within urban infrastructure development in Hyderabad. As commuters continue to grapple with daily traffic disruptions, there is mounting pressure on GHMC to expedite resolutions and prioritize the completion of critical infrastructure projects essential for city mobility and development.
