Hyderabad Waterlogging Solutions Sumps and Drains

To address the persistent issue of water stagnation in key areas such as Madhapur, Khairatabad, and Banjara Hills, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proposed a series of strategic measures. Among these measures is the construction of a box drain near Matha Bhuvaneswari Society in Madhapur and a rainwater harvesting pit at Shilparamam.

Significantly, GHMC has proposed the installation of two sumps equipped with motors at the RTA office in Khairatabad and near the Mercure Hotel in Banjara Hills. These sumps are designed to mitigate waterlogging issues that have long plagued these areas. Initially, the plan was to build two sumps with a capacity of 5 lakh litres each. However, due to space constraints, each sump will now have a capacity of 3 lakh litres.

An official from the civic body explained the necessity of these measures, stating, “The reduced size of the sumps is a practical adjustment considering the space limitations, but they will still significantly alleviate water stagnation problems.” These interventions reflect GHMC’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and addressing the challenges posed by heavy rainfall and inadequate drainage systems. The proposed sumps and other drainage solutions aim to prevent the accumulation of stagnant water, which not only causes inconvenience to residents but also poses health risks.

The GHMC’s comprehensive approach to urban planning and water management is expected to bring much-needed relief to the affected areas, demonstrating a proactive stance in dealing with infrastructural issues. This initiative marks a critical step towards improving the living conditions and ensuring the well-being of Hyderabad’s residents.
