Hyderabad Water Supply Faces 36 Hour Disruption

Several neighbourhoods in Hyderabad are expected to experience temporary interruptions in drinking water supply this weekend as utility authorities undertake a major maintenance operation within the city’s Hyderabad water supply network. The works are part of a system upgrade aimed at improving operational reliability of the Manjeera Phase III infrastructure, a key component of the metropolitan drinking water system.

The maintenance exercise is scheduled to begin on the morning of March 7 and is expected to continue for around 36 hours. During this period, residents in parts of the western growth corridor—including Manikonda, Kokapet, Narsingi and Manchirevula—may face a complete suspension of water supply, while several nearby areas could receive water at significantly reduced pressure.Officials overseeing the operation say the shutdown is required to replace ageing electrical equipment at the Peddapur pump house, an essential facility that pushes water through the Manjeera transmission network into Hyderabad’s distribution reservoirs. The existing electrical panels, installed more than three decades ago, are being replaced with modern systems designed to improve safety and reduce the risk of operational failures. In addition to the electrical upgrade, engineering teams will carry out repairs on critical pipeline infrastructure linked to the Hyderabad water supply system. Maintenance work will focus on air valves along a major pumping main connecting Peddapur and Singapur, as well as air vents located on a large-diameter gravity pipeline serving the same corridor.

Urban water specialists note that such components are crucial to maintaining pressure stability and preventing damage to pipelines in large water transmission systems. Faulty valves and vents can lead to air blockages, reduced flow efficiency and, in some cases, pipeline bursts. The temporary shutdown will also affect water movement into certain storage reservoirs. Supply to the Shaikpet reservoir is expected to be halted during the maintenance window, while the Bhojagutta reservoir may operate under reduced inflow conditions.Infrastructure analysts say periodic upgrades are necessary for ageing water systems in fast-growing metropolitan areas. Hyderabad’s water demand has risen steadily as residential development expands in suburban zones such as Kokapet and Narsingi, increasing pressure on existing supply infrastructure.

The Hyderabad water supply network relies on a combination of reservoirs, pumping stations and long-distance transmission pipelines that require regular technical upgrades to maintain service reliability. Many of these facilities were built decades ago when the city’s population and geographic footprint were significantly smaller.Utility experts emphasise that preventive maintenance, although disruptive in the short term, helps avoid large-scale failures that could lead to longer water outages. As Hyderabad continues to expand into new residential and commercial corridors, strengthening core water infrastructure will remain critical to sustaining urban growth and ensuring equitable access to essential services.
