Hyderabad To Vijayawada Greenfield Highway To Cut Travel Time By 2 Hours

Telangana government has announced the construction of a greenfield highway linking Hyderabad and Vijayawada. The project is set to reduce travel time between the two cities to just two hours, a dramatic improvement from the current average of five hours. The proposed greenfield highway is being positioned as a critical infrastructure corridor designed to improve logistics efficiency, ease passenger mobility, and spur economic development across the state.

The announcement was made during an inspection visit to Vanasthalipuram Junction, where senior government officials reviewed plans for an associated elevated corridor stretching six kilometres from LB Nagar to Pedda Amberpet. This elevated section, expected to cost Rs 650 crore, will help decongest one of the city’s busiest traffic zones and connect seamlessly to the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Officials confirmed that Rs 541 crore had already been secured for the LB Nagar-Malkapur section in an earlier phase, and reiterated that the current administration is committed to completing all pending works without delays. The six-lane elevated corridor will include multiple underpasses and is designed to link major traffic nodes efficiently, offering faster access to the newly proposed highway.

Work has already commenced on the Rs 2,300 crore Gauravelli-Valigonda-Bhadrachalam greenfield corridor, with construction currently underway on the Valigonda-Thorrur stretch. Tenders for the Thorrur-Bhadrachalam section are in progress. In parallel, construction of the Andole Maisamma-Vijayawada highway costing Rs 375 crore is advancing rapidly, according to infrastructure officials. The government is also prioritising safety along all proposed road networks. Seventeen high-risk black spots have been identified, and targeted interventions are planned to reduce accidents. In a major policy push, Telangana plans to adopt the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) for future road development, blending public funding with private sector efficiency.

Officials confirmed that permissions for Hyderabad Metro Phase-II have been escalated to the ministerial level, and consultations with the Central government are planned. The administration is preparing to meet Union ministers, including the Prime Minister, to secure approvals for the metro expansion and a proposed Regional Ring Railway project. The state aims to accelerate urban and regional transport infrastructure, aligning with broader sustainability goals. In a parallel development, the government also announced that the super-specialty TIMS Hospital in Sanathnagar will be inaugurated by September. Similar healthcare facilities are in various stages of construction across Hyderabad, part of a long-term strategy to improve public healthcare infrastructure and make high-quality services accessible to urban populations.

The greenfield highway project underscores the state’s commitment to reimagining regional mobility through sustainable and time-efficient transport systems. If executed on schedule, the Hyderabad-Vijayawada route could become a model of smart infrastructure planning for fast-growing urban regions across India.
