Hyderabad is preparing to construct a network of flyovers and underpasses around KBR Park as part of a two-year plan to establish a signal free corridor through one of the city’s most congested urban stretches. The initiative is expected to ease daily gridlock in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills while improving east–west connectivity across the metropolitan core.

Senior police and civic officials confirmed that seven grade-separated structures will be executed in phases under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure programme. The works are being coordinated between the municipal corporation, state agencies and traffic authorities to ensure sequencing of construction and limited daytime disruption.The project centres on junctions that routinely witness peak-hour bottlenecks, particularly near commercial and residential clusters that have seen intense real estate densification over the past decade. A steel flyover currently under construction at a key junction on Road No. 2 is part of the first phase. Additional pillars and deck work are scheduled largely during night hours to avoid paralysing traffic during business periods.

Officials indicated that temporary traffic diversions will be implemented as foundation works progress. However, they maintain that disruptions will be short-term when compared with the long-term gains of a signal free corridor that removes multiple traffic signals across the KBR Park loop.Urban mobility experts say such grade separation projects can reduce idling time and vehicular emissions in the immediate term, particularly on corridors where signal delays are frequent. However, they caution that signal free corridor strategies must be integrated with public transport and pedestrian safety improvements to avoid encouraging higher private vehicle dependence.

The stretch around KBR Park connects major employment districts, healthcare hubs and premium housing zones. Property consultants note that improved travel time reliability often strengthens micro-market valuations, especially in established neighbourhoods where land supply is constrained. At the same time, planners emphasise the need to balance flyover construction with protection of green cover and stormwater flows in an area known for its ecological sensitivity.Hyderabad’s traffic volumes have risen steadily alongside population growth and expanding commercial activity. The signal free corridor is positioned as an interim mobility intervention while longer-term investments in mass transit expansion, last-mile connectivity and demand management continue to evolve.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to provide uninterrupted movement between central, western and eastern parts of the city, cutting commute times for thousands of daily users. For a metropolis navigating rapid growth, the challenge will be ensuring that road infrastructure upgrades align with broader climate resilience goals and equitable access to safe, efficient mobility options.
