Hyderabad Proposes ₹19579 Cr Metro Project

Telangana government has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 2B of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project to the central government. The proposal outlines an ambitious 86.1-km expansion across three strategic corridors, with a projected investment of ₹19,579 crore. The initiative aims to strengthen intra-city connectivity, reduce road congestion, and foster sustainable public transport in the region.

The submission comes days after the Telangana Chief Minister met with the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs to personally present the case for the project. According to senior officials at Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), the DPR was prepared with technical assistance from national institutions and in consultation with various stakeholder departments.

The Phase 2B expansion plan includes three corridors: the 39.6-km stretch from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to Bharat Future City near the proposed Skills University (₹7,168 crore), a 24.5-km corridor from Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to Medchal (₹6,946 crore), and a 22-km extension from JBS to Shamirpet (₹5,465 crore). These lines are strategically aligned to connect major employment, educational, and residential zones, including the fast-developing IT and industrial corridors around Hyderabad.

The metro project is being planned under a joint venture model similar to the earlier Phase 2A proposal, where the central and state governments share funding responsibilities. As per the financial structure proposed, the Telangana government will contribute 30% (₹5,874 crore), the central government 18% (₹3,524 crore), with the remaining 52% sourced from international financial institutions (₹9,398 crore) and a small component through public-private partnerships (₹783 crore). The state cabinet had earlier approved this expansion as a critical component of its long-term urban infrastructure vision. Officials emphasised that the metro expansion will promote low-emission transport and reduce Hyderabad’s dependence on private vehicles, in line with broader climate goals and the central government’s Smart Cities Mission.

Once approved, the project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during its construction and operational phases. It also aligns with Hyderabad’s positioning as a tech and investment hub, ensuring that the city’s infrastructure keeps pace with its growing population and economic activity. The proposed metro corridors will further integrate with other mass transit modes such as buses and suburban rail, encouraging a shift toward multi-modal, last-mile connectivity. This is expected to reduce average commute times, vehicular pollution, and improve the overall quality of urban life in Hyderabad.

The central government is expected to review the DPR over the coming weeks. If cleared, the Hyderabad Metro Phase 2B project could begin implementation by early next year, marking another major leap in the city’s public transportation journey.
