Hyderabad is set to enhance pedestrian safety and streamline urban traffic with the announcement of six new skywalks across the city. The Telangana government, through the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), has identified high-traffic locations such as Afzalgunj, Madina, Lakdikapul petrol pump, BHEL, JNTU, and Miyapur T-junction as priority areas for construction.
Officials cited a pressing need to mitigate congestion and reduce accidents in these zones. The planned skywalks aim to separate pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic, improving commuter safety and ensuring smoother vehicular flow during peak hours.The initiative builds on the success of existing projects. The Uppal skywalk, already operational, has significantly eased traffic in its vicinity, while the Mehdipatnam skywalk is under rapid construction. A larger project at Secunderabad, connecting the railway station, metro hub, and bus terminal, is expected to provide considerable benefits to daily commuters.
A recent urban survey by LEE Associates identified 23 locations across Hyderabad requiring skywalks to improve pedestrian mobility and traffic management. Experts emphasised that integrating elevated walkways into city planning is crucial for building a more pedestrian-friendly and sustainable urban environment.HMDA officials explained that the new skywalks would not only enhance road safety but also support the city’s broader urban mobility goals, which include reducing carbon emissions and promoting equitable access for all pedestrians, including senior citizens and differently-abled individuals. The skywalks are designed to be modern, accessible, and environmentally conscious, incorporating sustainable materials and energy-efficient lighting.
Urban planners and traffic authorities have highlighted that such infrastructure developments are vital as Hyderabad continues to expand.
