The city is preparing to launch its first-ever ropeway connecting the iconic Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi Tombs. The project, currently under active discussion between the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and the Department of Tourism, is expected to create a seamless and scenic link between two of the city’s most historic landmarks.
Hyderabad, long celebrated for its blend of heritage and modernity, has been witnessing a surge in tourism-driven urban transformation. Officials said the proposed ropeway is part of a larger strategy to reimagine the city’s tourist experience by integrating heritage, eco-tourism, and green mobility. The aim is not just to attract new footfall but also to enhance the convenience and appeal for repeat visitors—both domestic and international. The Golconda Fort, steeped in Deccan history, has been one of the city’s top-drawing sites for years. Yet, the Qutb Shahi Tombs, located just a few kilometres away, often remain outside the typical tourist itinerary due to limited accessibility and visibility. Authorities believe the ropeway can bridge that gap—both physically and symbolically—by reintroducing the Qutb Shahi heritage to mainstream tourism circuits.
This ropeway proposal is also seen as a low-impact mobility solution. Officials confirmed that the project will be designed with minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape. “Sustainable urban tourism must prioritise non-intrusive access to heritage,” said a senior urban development official. The emphasis, they noted, would be on preserving the visual and ecological integrity of the area while encouraging responsible tourism. Beyond heritage-focused infrastructure, the city is undertaking a range of urban improvement initiatives. HMDA has begun working with the Forest Department on eco-tourism projects and biodiversity restoration at various parks and lakes. Boating upgrades at Hussain Sagar, enhanced public facilities at NTR Garden, and improved nature trails at Vanasthalipuram Deer Park and the Botanical Garden are among the upcoming initiatives.
Officials also indicated that integrated tourism packages will be introduced to help visitors navigate the city’s rich array of cultural and ecological offerings. “It is not just about sightseeing anymore. We are curating immersive, meaningful experiences across Hyderabad,” said a tourism expert involved in the planning process. The project aligns with the state government’s wider vision to position Hyderabad as a global tourism hub while maintaining its environmental and cultural ethos. Senior policymakers have called for a pollution-free, inclusive, and globally competitive urban environment. The success of recent events such as the Miss World pageant has already elevated Hyderabad’s visibility on the international map.
As discussions progress, the ropeway proposal is expected to serve as a test case for future mobility innovations in urban tourism across India. If implemented effectively, the model could help other heritage-rich cities balance access and conservation in an era of expanding urbanisation and tourism demand.
