Hyderabad’s pharmaceutical research ecosystem has received a strategic lift after the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Hyderabad was selected to host a Centre of Excellence under the Union government’s Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech scheme.
The designation positions the city at the forefront of bulk drug research, a segment considered vital for reducing India’s dependence on imported active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). For Telangana, where pharmaceuticals form a cornerstone of the urban economy, the move strengthens its role in national supply chain resilience and high-value research.The Centre of Excellence initiative is part of a ₹5,000 crore national programme running until FY2030, aimed at supporting research across the pharmaceutical and medical technology lifecycle. The scheme provides financial backing to industries, MSMEs and startups working on new molecules, complex generics, biosimilars and advanced medical devices, either independently or in partnership with academic institutions.
Industry observers say the Hyderabad Centre of Excellence could deepen collaboration between laboratories and manufacturing clusters located across the city’s life sciences corridor. By focusing on bulk drugs, the centre is expected to enhance process innovation, scale-up capabilities and cost competitiveness in domestic API production.Hyderabad has long been regarded as one of India’s leading pharma hubs, hosting major manufacturing facilities, research parks and export-oriented units.
