Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to construct two three-lane flyovers at the Kukatpally ‘Y’ junction. The initiative, forming a key part of the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) programme, aims to streamline vehicular movement and elevate overall urban mobility standards in the region.
The Rs 180 crore project, which will be delivered under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, has received administrative sanction from the state government as of December 2024. The GHMC has already begun inviting bids for the development of the Kukatpally ‘Y’ junction as well as the nearby IDL Lake junction, with preliminary survey and investigation works currently underway. The proposed infrastructure will see one flyover connecting Kukatpally towards Ameerpet on the left-hand side, and the other towards Miyapur on the right-hand stretch of National Highway 65. Officials from the GHMC’s engineering division stated that the dual-flyover configuration is a data-backed solution, supported by traffic load analysis which revealed significant bottlenecks and slowdowns at peak hours.
These new flyovers are expected to significantly improve travel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions caused by idling vehicles. Each structure will incorporate features designed to align with global best practices in sustainable urban infrastructure, including sacrificial shuttering, reinforced soil walls, RCC toe walls, crash barriers, and friction slabs. Additionally, anti-carbonation coatings will be applied to all exposed concrete surfaces to enhance durability against pollution and monsoonal wear.
Urban planners involved in the project added that the enhancements go beyond mere flyover construction. A key component of the development will focus on the beautification and utilisation of space beneath the viaducts. Landscaped areas, better lighting, and integrated drainage systems will be introduced to transform what is often underutilised urban space into visually appealing, functional zones. Safety is also a paramount concern. Plans include the installation of overhead gantries, safety view barriers, and advanced road signage. The project’s emphasis on pedestrian safety will see upgraded footpaths along at-grade roads, complemented by utility ducts and strategically placed retaining structures. These elements aim to ensure that the project is inclusive and future-ready, accommodating both motorised and non-motorised traffic.
The broader scope of the flyover development includes road strengthening, pavement widening, and integrated junction redesign. At-grade works such as earth cutting and filling, revised road geometry, kerb realignment, and thermoplastic pavement markings will bring the intersections up to modern specifications. Drainage connections will also be modernised to minimise flooding risks, particularly during Hyderabad’s intense monsoon periods. Transportation experts have welcomed the project but caution that timely execution and coordination with utility departments will be critical to its success. Delay in shifting underground cables, pipelines or sewerage systems has historically derailed several urban infrastructure projects in Hyderabad. To mitigate such setbacks, GHMC has begun coordination meetings with relevant utility stakeholders to ensure the relocation and integration works are carried out parallel to construction phases.
The twin-flyover initiative is being seen not only as a traffic decongestion measure but also as a part of a broader strategy to reimagine Hyderabad’s urban landscape with an eye on sustainability and inclusivity. City officials highlighted that the flyovers are being planned in a manner that would be consistent with the GHMC’s climate-resilient urban development roadmap. Given Kukatpally’s role as a key commercial and residential hub, the project is expected to offer long-term returns in the form of improved productivity, air quality, and commuting experience. The proposed flyovers also fall in line with the Telangana government’s larger vision of transforming Hyderabad into a global city through smart, sustainable infrastructure. The project contributes directly to goals set under the H-CITI initiative, which includes decongestion of major junctions, integration of smart traffic management systems, and enhancement of civic aesthetics.
Once tenders are finalised, construction is expected to commence in the last quarter of 2025. GHMC estimates a construction window of 24 to 30 months, barring any unforeseen delays. The agency has assured citizens that traffic diversions, noise control, and pollution mitigation measures will be enforced during construction to minimise inconvenience to local residents and commuters. The city’s commuters, particularly residents and daily travellers from Kukatpally, Miyapur and surrounding areas, have responded positively to the proposed development. Several have voiced support for long-overdue capacity upgrades at one of Hyderabad’s busiest and most chaotic traffic points.
While the ultimate test of the project will be in its execution, the Kukatpally twin flyovers are a significant step toward resolving Hyderabad’s urban transit challenges and setting a precedent for smart, equitable city-building in the future.
