Hyderabad Flags Off CONCORs First Green Cement Tank Rake to Bengaluru

Hyderabad has marked a major milestone in sustainable logistics with the launch of Container Corporation of India Ltd.’s (CONCOR) first bulk cement tank container rake. The freight consignment, flagged off from Maha Cement’s facility in Mellacheruvu, Andhra Pradesh, is headed to the Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Whitefield, Bengaluru.

This pioneering move represents a strategic shift in cement transportation from conventional bagged systems to specialised tank containers, offering a host of environmental and operational advantages. The use of these containers ensures the safe, efficient transfer of cement in loose form, dramatically reducing transit losses, eliminating excessive handling, and slashing carbon emissions across the route. CONCOR’s deployment of the tank container rake is being hailed as a game changer for the Indian freight sector. Unlike traditional cement logistics—which rely heavily on sacks, manual loading, and multiple transit points—this approach embraces an integrated, multimodal model aligned with India’s decarbonisation goals. The sealed containers also limit dust pollution, thereby contributing to improved air quality along the transportation route.

By enabling direct, end-to-end transport between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the initiative strengthens regional connectivity while minimising infrastructure stress and reducing turnaround time. This is particularly critical for high-volume construction materials like cement, which have long posed challenges in terms of handling, storage, and delivery efficiency. With the successful launch of this rake, CONCOR has reaffirmed its role as a leader in sustainable and customer-focused logistics. The company’s continued investment in infrastructure, innovation, and green freight solutions is in line with India’s broader strategy to modernise supply chains and lower overall logistics costs, currently hovering at 13–14% of GDP.

As bulk movement via tank containers scales up, stakeholders anticipate ripple effects across the construction, infrastructure, and transport sectors. The model not only improves product safety and operational agility but also promotes a long-term shift toward eco-conscious freight practices. Hyderabad’s role in initiating this project further cements its place on the map as a hub for logistics innovation, with ripple benefits expected to extend far beyond regional trade corridors.
