As monsoon season nears, authorities in Hyderabad have identified 141 flood-prone areas across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, ramping up efforts to minimise disruption and damage during heavy rains.
At a high-level coordination meeting held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) in Banjara Hills on Tuesday, top officials reviewed the city’s flood response preparedness. The meeting focused on waterlogging hotspots and real-time flood monitoring using the TGICCC’s advanced data infrastructure. TGICCC Director VB Kamalasan Reddy proposed forming a Joint Action Team comprising officers from key departments to ensure seamless coordination during rainfall events. He emphasised the importance of using TGICCC’s real-time data systems to manage traffic congestion and emergency responses during peak weather events. Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand called for the early deployment of emergency teams at critical locations to prevent disruptions. Stressing proactive planning, he urged all departments to prepare in advance for the anticipated monsoon impact.
Y Nagi Reddy of the Fire Services Department highlighted the urgent need for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that clearly outlines departmental roles. He argued that a formal framework is essential for managing not only floods but also related fire and safety emergencies. The session concluded with all participating departments reaffirming their commitment to a unified, real-time response strategy focused on public safety and minimal service disruption during the rainy season. The meeting included officials from GHMC, Hyderabad Collectorate, Fire Services, Hyderabad Disaster Response and Fire Services Academy (HYDRAA), Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL), Medical and Health Department, and police commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda.
With climate variability increasing the intensity of monsoons, this integrated, multi-agency approach is seen as a critical step towards making Hyderabad more resilient and responsive to seasonal flooding risks.
