Hyderabad Eco Park opens near Himayatsagar

Hyderabad has added a major new public green space with the opening of a large Hyderabad Eco Park near the Himayatsagar reservoir, an initiative designed to combine urban recreation with nature-based tourism. Developed by the metropolitan planning authority across roughly 85 acres on the city’s western fringe, the project reflects the growing role of ecological parks in supporting healthier, climate-resilient urban environments.

Urban planners say the Hyderabad Eco Park is part of a broader effort to expand recreational infrastructure while protecting sensitive water catchment zones around the city’s historic reservoirs. Located near Kothwalguda, the park sits within an environmentally important landscape that contributes to Hyderabad’s water security and biodiversity. The development introduces a mix of leisure, education and conservation-oriented attractions. A 1.5-kilometre elevated boardwalk allows visitors to walk through landscaped green areas while minimising disturbance to the surrounding terrain. The park also features a large aviary housing several thousand birds representing multiple species from different continents, intended to encourage environmental awareness among visitors and school groups.

Officials involved in the project say the design attempts to balance visitor access with ecological sensitivity. Structures such as the main entry plaza and architectural elements use bamboo and other natural materials to reinforce a low-impact visual identity. Large landscaped zones, butterfly gardens and open green lawns are aimed at supporting pollinators and native plant life.Beyond ecological elements, the site has been planned as a multi-purpose public space. An open-air amphitheatre with seating for hundreds of people will host cultural gatherings and community events, while children’s play zones and shaded activity areas are intended to make the park accessible to families. The planning authority estimates the project required an investment of around ₹75 crore.

The opening comes as Hyderabad’s metropolitan region faces rising demand for accessible outdoor spaces. Rapid urban expansion has increased pressure on natural ecosystems while simultaneously highlighting the need for public parks that improve quality of life. Urban policy researchers note that large eco-parks can play an important role in cooling city microclimates, reducing heat stress and offering residents alternatives to built-up commercial entertainment zones. The park is also expected to strengthen the emerging eco-tourism corridor developing along the reservoir belt on the western edge of Hyderabad. Tourism and hospitality businesses in surrounding areas anticipate increased weekend visitation as nature-based attractions gain popularity among urban residents.Urban development experts emphasise that the long-term success of the Hyderabad Eco Park will depend on careful maintenance, biodiversity protection and responsible visitor management. As cities across India expand, integrating green infrastructure into metropolitan planning is increasingly seen as essential for sustainable growth and equitable access to public space. For Hyderabad, the project signals a gradual shift towards integrating recreation, environmental stewardship and urban planning within the same landscape framework.
