Hyderabad Crippled By Relentless Monsoon Rains Widespread Flooding Reported

Hyderabad, relentless monsoon rainfall battered the city on Friday, leading to widespread flooding, submerged low-lying areas, and significant traffic chaos. Hussain Sagar neared its Full Tank Level (FTL), prompting immediate alerts for residents in adjacent low-lying zones to exercise caution. The intense downpour effectively brought the city to a near standstill, severely disrupting daily life, affecting commuters, and causing water to enter residential and commercial properties across various localities.

Telangana’s capital experienced severe waterlogging, particularly in several parts of the Old City, including areas around Basheer Function Hall and Ramaswamygunj, where water stagnation reached up to three feet. Floodwaters inundated homes in neighborhoods like Yakutpura, Tallabkatta, Lalithabagh, and Al Jubail Colony, while commercial building cellars in Bahadurpura and Bandlaguda also saw water ingress. Experts attributed the extensive flooding to Hyderabad’s drainage infrastructure, which was not designed for such intense rainfall, exacerbated by encroached or clogged nalas reducing natural water flow.

Friday’s rain caused widespread commuter distress, with major junctions such as Gachibowli, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Tarnaka, and Lakdi-ka-pul experiencing severe bottlenecks. Rainwater resembled swift currents in areas like Gayatrinagar in Ameerpet and Nacharam Bhavaninagar, even pulling auto-rickshaws. Schoolchildren in Secunderabad were stranded, and industrial premises in Jeedimetla were inundated, with visuals showing floating two-wheelers and goods. Metro stations saw an unusual surge in footfall, leading to overcrowded platforms and ticket counters at key hubs as citizens sought alternative transport.

The Cyberabad Joint Commissioner of Police conducted field inspections and coordinated with civic bodies like the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and HYDRAA for immediate dewatering and traffic regulation. Citizens have been advised to follow traffic advisories and avoid non-essential travel in flooded areas. Key rainfall figures until 5 PM on Friday included Bowenpally Ward Office at 93.0 mm and Indira Nagar at 91.8 mm. The India Meteorological Department forecasts moderate to heavy showers through the weekend, urging preparedness for continued rainfall.

Across Hyderabad, the intense monsoon rains underscore the city’s vulnerability to urban flooding, necessitating enhanced civic infrastructure and active citizen cooperation. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement emergency response measures, urging preparedness and caution to mitigate further disruptions and ensure public safety during this challenging and ongoing monsoon period.
