The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated efforts to bolster the city’s flood resilience by appealing for financial assistance amounting to ₹250 crore from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
With the monsoon season looming, the civic body aims to proactively address potential flooding risks through strategic infrastructure development and early warning systems. The proposed funds will primarily be allocated towards two key areas: the enhancement of drainage infrastructure and the establishment of a comprehensive flood early warning and management system. Out of the total allocation, ₹200 crore is earmarked for the development of nalas and the improvement of water bodies, crucial components in mitigating flood-related challenges. Additionally, ₹50 crore will be dedicated to fortifying the Hyderabad flood early warning and management system, ensuring timely alerts and swift response mechanisms during periods of heavy rainfall.
The GHMC’s proactive stance aligns with its commitment to safeguarding Hyderabad against the recurring threat of urban flooding, a persistent challenge exacerbated by rapid urbanisation and inadequate infrastructure. By securing financial assistance from NDMA, the civic body aims to bolster its flood preparedness measures and minimise the impact of heavy rainfall on the city’s residents and infrastructure. However, the GHMC’s appeal comes against the backdrop of delays in the release of funds earmarked for flood risk mitigation under the National Disaster Risk Management Fund program. While Hyderabad was identified as one of the seven populous cities slated to receive support under this initiative, the awaited funds have yet to materialise. In the interim, the GHMC has undertaken significant embankment works as part of the SNDP phase-I, investing over ₹700 crore to fortify the city’s flood defences.
As Hyderabad braces itself for the impending monsoon season, the GHMC’s plea for NDMA assistance underscores the critical need for collaborative efforts in addressing urban flooding challenges. By leveraging external support and prioritising proactive measures, the civic body aims to enhance Hyderabad’s resilience to natural disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
