Hyderabad Braces For Heavy Rain Thunderstorms And Gusty Winds Till Seventeenth

Authorities in Hyderabad have issued a weather alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Telangana until August 17. The warning includes the likelihood of intense showers, lightning, and gusty winds, prompting municipal bodies to prepare for potential waterlogging and traffic disruptions in the city.

According to IMD officials, heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated locations between August 13 and 17, with thunderstorms and wind speeds of 30–40 kmph anticipated in several parts of the state. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone zones, as some areas could see 30–50 mm of rain within short periods. The city has already experienced intense rainfall over recent days, with Saturday night’s downpour leading to significant waterlogging in multiple neighbourhoods. Amberpet recorded the highest rainfall at 11 cm, followed by Himayatnagar at 10 cm, according to the daily weather report for Telangana.

Officials said the municipal disaster response teams have been placed on standby, with pumping equipment and rescue personnel deployed in strategic areas. The GHMC has also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and to report waterlogging or fallen trees through its helpline. Experts in urban resilience highlight that such heavy rainfall events, while typical of the monsoon season, are becoming increasingly intense and unpredictable due to climate change. They emphasise the need for Hyderabad to invest in sustainable drainage systems, rainwater harvesting, and climate-adaptive infrastructure to reduce the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather. The forecast has also raised concerns for daily commuters and businesses. Transport analysts note that heavy rain combined with waterlogging can slow down traffic movement, disrupt bus services, and cause delays in last-mile delivery for goods and services. For outdoor workers, including those in construction and street vending, safety advisories have been issued to avoid exposure during peak rainfall periods.

Telangana’s agricultural belt is also expected to receive substantial rainfall, which could benefit water-intensive crops but may pose risks of flooding in certain districts. Officials from the state agriculture department said they are monitoring field conditions closely and will issue guidance to farmers to safeguard standing crops. As Hyderabad braces for another spell of monsoon intensity, the focus remains on preparedness and public safety. Authorities continue to urge citizens to stay informed through official weather updates, remain indoors during severe storms, and support community-level measures to mitigate the impacts of heavy rainfall.
