Hyderabad Begins Intensive Cleanup Of Water Bodies To Curb Monsoon Diseases

Hyderabad is undergoing a large-scale sanitation drive aimed at cleaning its major water bodies ahead of the intensifying monsoon. Led by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and its Entomology Department, the operation targets stagnant waste, water hyacinth, and mosquito breeding zones, particularly in the flood-prone Karwan constituency.

To enhance efficiency, heavy machinery including floating weed-harvesting units and Hitachi excavators have been deployed across sites like Katora Houz, the Musi River stretch in Karwan, Langar Houz HUDA Pond, and Shah Hatim Lake. The initiative, backed by local MLA Kausar Mohiuddin and supported by AIMIM, is being executed in phases, with special focus on reducing water pollution and preventing outbreaks of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria.

In a first for the city’s monsoon preparedness, drones are spraying mosquito larvicidal oil over open water surfaces to target mosquito larvae directly—marking a proactive, tech-enabled approach to public health.

The broader effort also includes waste removal from flood-prone zones, drain desilting, and fogging operations in residential localities. GHMC’s sanitary workers, aided by earth movers and transport trucks, are actively clearing long-standing garbage heaps across neighborhoods. GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan emphasized the need for community participation and political cooperation to ensure the sustainability of the cleanup.

With rains approaching and infection risks peaking, Hyderabad’s focused approach aims not only to improve urban hygiene but to restore public confidence in municipal preparedness.
