Hyderabad Airport Plans Expansion to Meet Future Demand

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad is set to expand its capacity to meet the growing passenger demand, according to the GMR Group, which manages the facility. Plans under consideration include the addition of a second terminal and a second runway once annual passenger traffic reaches 45 million, projected by 2030.

SGK Kishore, Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer of GMR Airports, expressed confidence in the airport’s growth trajectory. “We are expecting 45 million passengers annually by 2030. While this is an estimate, proactive planning is necessary based on current trends,” Kishore said. From 12 Million to 100 Million Capacity
RGIA, originally built in 2008 with a capacity for 12 million passengers, has steadily increased its capacity to handle 34 million annually with a single integrated terminal. GMR aims to take this further, envisioning an ultimate capacity of 100 million passengers per year. The current expansion discussions are a response to Hyderabad’s rapidly growing status as a business hub and transit destination. With the airport’s traffic currently at 30 million annually, the need for additional infrastructure is becoming increasingly evident.

In a move to optimise existing operations, the airport recently introduced an AI-powered Airport Predictive Operation Centre (APOC). This advanced system integrates real-time data from airside, landside, and terminal operations, enabling seamless decision-making and minimising disruptions. “APOC is a transformative leap in airport management, ensuring smooth functioning and enhanced passenger experience,” a GMR official explained. The planned second terminal and runway would not only ease congestion but also position RGIA as a key player in global aviation. As Hyderabad continues to grow as a major economic and cultural centre, these developments are expected to support the city’s aspirations for greater connectivity and economic growth. With its blend of infrastructure expansion and cutting-edge technology, RGIA is poised to meet future demands while maintaining operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction.
