Honeywell, a global technology company, has partnered with Biotrend Energy to construct Turkey’s inaugural commercial advanced waste recycling facility. The plant, utilising Honeywell UOP UpCycle Process Technology, will convert mixed waste plastics into recycled polymer feedstock (RPF), a significant step towards establishing a circular economy for plastics in the region. The collaboration aims to address the increasing demand for recycled plastic products and contribute to global circular economy commitments.
Honeywell has signed agreements with Biotrend Energy to supply equipment, license production, and provide warranties for the construction of two parallel modular units with a capacity of 30,000 mt each. Located in the Izmir region of Turkey, these units are expected to be operational by 2025. The advanced recycling plant plans to process 60,000 mt (66,139 tonne) of mixed waste plastics annually, doubling the originally projected capacity of 30,000 mt announced in 2022. Biotrend Energy will be responsible for supplying the feedstock, while Honeywell UOP will offer engineering, technical services, and support throughout the plant’s lifespan.
The planned advanced recycling facility will be a ground-breaking initiative in Turkey and worldwide. As leading companies commit to circular economy principles, there is a growing demand for recycled plastic products. Honeywell UOP UpCycle Process Technology, employed in the project, will support Biotrend Energy in increasing the volume of circular materials recovered. The facility will enable the recycling of original raw plastic material, contributing to the realization of a true circular economy.
Biotrend Energy is a trailblazer in the integrated waste management industry in Turkey, currently processing 4,500,000 tonne of waste annually across 18 facilities. Their operations encompass waste transfer, recycling, landfill management, waste-to-energy conversion, and production of organic fertiliser and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). The collaboration with Honeywell marks a significant milestone in Biotrend Energy’s efforts to enhance waste recycling capabilities.
