In response to escalating demand for water tankers, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has swiftly implemented a new operational strategy, shifting water tanker deliveries to nighttime hours effective immediately.
This strategic decision stems from a comprehensive review of summer activities conducted by key stakeholders, including M. Danakishore, Chief Secretary of the Municipal and Urban Development Department, and Sudarshan Reddy, Managing Director of HMWSSB. Mr. Danakishore highlighted a surge in demand for water board tankers, attributed to the depletion of underground water resources, particularly evident in Divisions-15, 6, 9, and 18 of the city. Notably, 73% of total bookings originate from these divisions, underscoring the pressing need for immediate action. Despite assurance of adequate water supply, the Board recognises the necessity to augment distribution capabilities.
To meet this challenge, plans are underway to increase water supply by an additional 12 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) by April, complementing the existing supply increase of 10 MGD compared to the previous year. In alignment with these efforts, the Board has instructed authorities to allocate tankers for domestic use during daylight hours and for commercial purposes during the night. Specialised shift officers are being appointed to oversee nighttime distribution, ensuring seamless coordination and addressing evolving consumer demands. Moreover, the Board intends to enhance operational efficiency by appointing nodal officers to oversee divisional activities, including monitoring consumer demand, tanker availability, and driver deployment. During the upcoming Ramzan season, dedicated officers will ensure uninterrupted water supply to mosques and adjacent areas, reaffirming HMWSSB’s commitment to community service. With over 580 tankers at its disposal, HMWSSB remains steadfast in its mission to provide essential water services, operating in two shifts from 6 am to 10 pm to cater to the diverse needs of Hyderabad’s residents.
