The second terminal of the Maharaja Agrasen Airport in Hisar witnessed its formal inauguration alongside the launch of commercial flight operations to Ayodhya. This move forms part of a wider infrastructure push in Haryana, aiming to develop Hisar as a significant aviation hub with broader national and regional linkages.
Situated just five kilometres northeast of the city on NH-9, the airport’s development underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing tier-two city accessibility while encouraging religious and cultural tourism. The newly launched phase includes the foundational stone laying for a ₹410 crore second terminal that is slated to redefine air mobility in the region. Designed with an eye on future scalability, the expansion involves the construction of a 37,390 square metre terminal capable of handling increased passenger flow, along with a 2,235 square metre cargo terminal and a new air traffic control tower. Once operational by April 2027, the upgraded infrastructure will enable the airport to accommodate Airbus aircraft carrying up to 180 passengers, reinforcing Hisar’s viability as a strategic node in India’s expanding aviation landscape.
Equally noteworthy is the rollout of five new air routes connecting Hisar with Ayodhya, Jammu, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. The commercial operations on these routes, operated by a domestic carrier under a state-level agreement, aim to spur regional tourism and economic integration. Of particular significance is the Hisar-Ayodhya flight, which serves the growing demand for religious travel while acting as a corridor for cultural exchange. These connections are expected to gradually transform Hisar into a key destination not only for passengers but also for aviation-linked commerce and employment.
Embedded within a larger development plan, the airport’s location forms part of a proposed Integrated Aviation Hub spread across 7,200 acres. Of this, 4,200 acres have been earmarked for airport operations, while another 3,000 acres are being developed as an Integrated Manufacturing Cluster. This ambitious layout aligns with Haryana’s broader industrial and urban development roadmap, positioning the state as a forward-looking logistics and mobility centre. While the current development underscores progress in physical infrastructure, its impact will also be measured by how equitably it benefits local communities, environmental priorities, and the sustainable growth of regional economies.
