The Union government has initiated road construction projects valued at approximately ₹73,000 crore. This ambitious initiative encompasses the development of around 768 kilometres of national highways and the construction of 68 tunnels, aiming to bolster connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is spearheading projects worth ₹43,000 crore, which include key stretches such as the Parwanoo-Dhalli highway (₹7,913 crore), Pinjore-Baddi-Nalagarh (₹1,692 crore), Kiratpur-Manali (₹13,784 crore), Pathankot-Mandi (₹10,067 crore), and Shimla-Mataur (₹10,512 crore). These projects are strategically designed to improve accessibility and reduce travel time across various parts of the state.
However, the progress of these projects has been marred by administrative delays. Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Ajay Tamta, has attributed the stalling of certain projects to the lack of necessary clearances from the state government. He emphasized that the central government has provided ample support and resources, and the onus now lies on the state authorities to facilitate the smooth execution of these infrastructure developments.
The state’s Public Works Department (PWD) oversees a significant portion of the national highways, with 1,231 kilometres under its jurisdiction. The remaining stretches are managed by the NHAI and the Border Roads Organization (BRO), covering 792 kilometres and 569 kilometres, respectively. Currently, 18 projects are underway under the Union road transport and highways ministry’s Shimla regional office, reflecting the extensive scope of infrastructure development in the region.
These infrastructure projects are not only pivotal for improving transportation but also play a crucial role in promoting sustainable development. By enhancing connectivity, they facilitate better access to remote areas, thereby contributing to economic upliftment and social integration. Moreover, the construction of tunnels and highways is being undertaken with a focus on minimizing environmental impact, aligning with the broader goals of eco-friendly and sustainable urban development.
As Himachal Pradesh navigates the complexities of infrastructure expansion, the collaboration between central and state governments becomes imperative. Efficient coordination and timely clearances are essential to ensure that these projects reach fruition, ultimately transforming the state’s transportation landscape and fostering inclusive growth.
